*1987 Vera Leisibach pursues an artistic practice in which she documents inconspicuous, fascinating details in everyday life, creating a sprawling video and photo archive. These seemingly trivial moments are captured with a cell phone camera. Depending on the collaboration and context, this archive is drawn upon and the photos and videos are included. Art in public space also plays a major role in Leisibach’s practice, often creating site-themed and context-specific works by artistically portraying a place. With the same attention, Leisibach roams YouTube and captures absurd moments there. Leisibach then creates new compositions from these YouTube snippets, such as in the video essay “In Reverse.” The video essay addresses the climate debate in the U.S. and Australia, as well as the main-stream media’s treatment of so-called climate critics. Using the same technique is the latest experimental video, “Crush The Virus of Fake News,” which explores rhetorical techniques such as “firehosing” and “gaslighting.” A type of propaganda that aims to undermine democratic structures. It explores the question of why outright lies have found such favor in politics recently. In her latest project, “Becky’s Garden,” which includes 11 digital photography collages. Leisibach deals with the extinction of the monarch butterfly. With super aesthetic collages, the artist reflects on the extraordinary beauty that could disappear due to insect extinction.
